Paul Moody

Managing Director

Paul had a 25 year career in the weighing industry, his background is in service and quality management. He was also the owner and managing director of Solent Scales for 10 years before its sale in 2021. He was also on the UK Weighing Federation’s board of Directors from October 2015 until March 2022.

Paul played a key role in developing our Quality System and ensuring we achieved UKAS accreditation. His broad range of business experience, understanding of quality systems and commitment to our customers means he is well placed to support you in achieving the relevant marketplace certifications. 

Richard Herbert

Director

Richard incorporated the UK Metrology Board in February 2022. He has a background in the financial services industry, beginning as a Chartered Accountant at EY in 1976.  He joined the family business, Herbert Retail Group, in 1979 and has been its chairman since 2002.  He was previously the President of the UK Weighing Federation and sits on the board of several charities. Richard’s wealth of business experience and knowledge of the weighing industry have helped us create a fast, professional, and trustworthy certification service.

Ian Turner

Technical Advisor

Ian has more than 35 years of experience in the field of legal metrology. He began his career as an Inspector for a Weights and Measures Authority in 1987. Since 2009, Ian has served as the Technical Advisor for the UK Weighing Federation, advising clients on regulatory compliance and ensuring they obtain the necessary legal metrology certificates to operate their businesses.

 He is the Editor of “O’Keefe- The Law of Weights and Measures” and works for CEN as the external consultant for harmonised standards under the metrology Directives. Ian’s understanding of legal metrology and his ability to explain the legislative and technical aspects of the auditing and certification process guarantees that we can help you achieve a higher level of compliance.

Andy Hayward

Technical Advisor

Andy became a Weights and Measures Inspector in 1990 and was responsible for setting up the first mass-calibrated laboratory in Wales. He was previously a Lecturer at the University of Wales, lecturing in Metrology, Trading Standards and Intellectual Property. 

He has also been responsible for the running of the UKAS calibration and testing laboratory for Gateshead County Council  – the first in the country to verify for 0.5mg measures.

Andy taught legal metrology for the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI). His commitment to precision, compliance and evolving technologies ensures that the technical advice we give will help you to future proof your business.

Phil Thomas

Auditor

Phil has been conducting audits for the UK Metrology Board since July 2023. He has more than 40 years of experience in working with businesses, having previously worked in the Trading Standards profession as head of service for one of the largest local authorities in the UK. 

Since leaving Trading Standards in 2012, Phil has focused on auditing, ensuring businesses all across the world are compliant with the legal metrology rules for the market they operate in. He has conducted over 250 assessments in 20 countries, including the UK, Europe, the USA, and the Far East. Phil’s passion for the auditing process, ability to communicate effectively, and rapport with our clients simplifies the auditing process, ensuring you feel informed and supported throughout.

Iain Hoey

Auditor

Iain is the Principal Trading Standards Officer at Aberdeen City Council and the Technical Manager for Scottish Trading Standards Approved Body. He is also one of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute’s lead officers for legal metrology and a trainer and examiner.  Iain’s experience as a Trading Standards Officer enables him to help you achieve the highest level of compliance and understand how you can continue to adhere to the standards set out by your certification.

Damian Chester

Auditor

Damian is a Chartered Trading Standards Officer and a member of the CTSI. He specialises in Weights and Measures, Product Safety, Investigations and Regulating Markets and also has a BSI certificate as a lead auditor for ISO9001 Quality Management.


He currently sits on the National Legal Metrology Technical Panel and the OPSS Legal Metrology Group, ensuring synchronicity between central government policy and local authority actions.


Before becoming a Trading Standards Officer, Damian was a Regional Investigator for Trading Standards. Damian brings a wealth of experience to UKMB. He prides himself on advising businesses on what they need to do to comply with the law and supporting them in achieving that.

Brian TiLdsley

Auditor

Brian has almost 60 years of experience in the weighing industry covering manufacture design and latterly managed Type Approval of instruments worldwide. He previously worked the the National Measurement office covering QM auditing of clients management systems for NAWI Module D and MIR.

As one of our most experienced auditors Brian knows there is no one size fits all approach to certification and will ensure you understand exactly what is required from you at your audit and will clearly explain every step of the process.

Melanie Johnson

Corporate Communications Manager

Melanie is a content marketer and communications specialist. She has a background in sales and marketing and is the co-founder of a Sussex-based content marketing agency – The Sussex Social. Melanie is responsible for all aspects of our marketing, helping us to keep you updated and informed about legislative changes, industry news and our services.

Cognition has  been working with the UKMB since the company began trading in 2022.  They handle all aspects of UKMB administration, including accounting, Companies House secretary duties, governance, and legal matters.
